Geographically, Nova Scotia is that peninsula which hangs off the edge of Eastern Canada. It is attached to New Brunswick by the Chignecto Isthmus and is very close to Prince Edward Island and Maine. The province actually consists of the peninsula just described and of Cape Breton Island which is to the north and attached via the Canso Causeway.

Demographically Nova Scotia is the most populous province in the Maritimes. Its capital, Halifax, is the economic and cultural centre of the region.
