Info: Magick: Yoga

I got into Yoga during one of my trips to the United States in the early 1970s. At that time I got two books, one on Hatha Yoga which is the Yoga most people think of when they thing of Yoga. The Yoga of physical postures and exercises. The other was on Raja Yoga: the Yoga of Meditation. I think I actually still have both of those books out at my house in Sheet Harbour, so maybe I'll be able to provide more details to them sometime, maybe even actual links.

I have not had much live instruction in Yoga. I do particularly remember though a Yoga guru from India who gave a Hatha Yoga class at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in the same boardroom where New Moon Circle later (1990s) held its meetings.

Yoga has of course long been associated with the idea of enlightenment, so over the years I have read quite a few books about it. For actual physical movements and such though I have personally tended more toward a kind of intuitive Tai Chi kind of thing than Hatha Yoga. I cannot recall what books led me in that direction, although I do recall one whose subtitle was something along the lines of "Self defense for gentle people".

The Yoga Meditation book though influenced me quite a bit. I did a lot of meditating along the lines described in that book. It was what got me into a lifelong habit of meditating. I think that was very beneficial, and it is still one of the two main books I would recommend to anyone I wanted to encourage to get into meditating. Thus I shall try to make a point of looking it up next time I am at the house in Sheet Harbour. (I am still living in Halifax as I write this in November 2006.)
