Classical mechanics is in essence all of physics that is bound by determinism. Our interest in it is mainly as a contrast against the stuff that we find more interesting, which is, basically, non-classical mechanics such as quantum mechanics. Classical mechanics is fundamental not only to most of the macroscopic phenomena of the actual universe but also to the basic concept of automation, which is basically the exploitation of determinism. In classical mechanics the universe is basically a machine; it is totally automatic, totally deterministic.
